Fez
The oldest and largest medieval city in the world, Fez was founded in 789 A.D. and is considered the intellectual, spiritual, cultural and religious capital of Morocco. For over 400 years, Fez was the country’s capital.
In 1912, when France established Rabat as the new capital, its political importance declined, but its religious and cultural role continues today, centred around the two famous mosques of Al-Qarawiyin and Al-Andalus in the heart of the medina.
Things to see and do in Fez
Fez’s many palaces, museums, mosques, labyrinth of streets and crumbling grandeur lend an air of intrigue and mystery to the city, and exploring the full wealth of its offerings would take weeks rather than days. The city is distinctly divided into two: Fez el Jedid (the New) and Fez el Bali (the Old). Fez el Bali retains its medieval charm as donkeys and mules are still the preferred mode of transport as the narrow streets restrict cars to the outside perimeter. More
