Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (KGSAAS)
Premier golf – the home of night Golf
27 holes, 40 minutes from the city centre
A palatial clubhouse overlooks the world’s first 27-hole floodlit course. As no buggies are allowed this gently undulating course is made for easy walking. Peter Thompson’s trademark pot-bunkers, rolling fairways and elevated greens are all present on this immaculately maintained course. He has come up with a real gem that is friendly to the high handicapper but offers a stern test to the serious golfer. This is one of Malaysia’s premier courses and is a must for those visiting KL.
Glenmarie Golf & Country Club
Tricky doglegs – in a tropical ambience
2 x 18 holes – floodlit, 20 minutes from the city centre
The Garden course is situated on hilly terrain landscaped with a variety of pine trees and has some tricky doglegs and blind holes. The Valley course meanders through palm trees and rainforests creating a tropical ambience. Max Wexler has used subtle breaks on small greens, requiring them to be read very carefully. All in all a good test of golf on a well maintained course that can be quite windy, a refreshing breeze is always welcome in Malaysia!
Staffield Golf Club
Last chance saloon
27 holes, 1hr 15minutes from the city centre
As it is only 10 miles from the airport this is the place to play your final round before flying home. Built to blend in with the natural surroundings and armed to the teeth with strategically placed sand traps, water hazards, fairway mounds and clingy rough this is a true test for all golfers. Bunkers and large sandy waste areas are a feature of Rodney Marsh’s design, there are 82 sand traps in total, as well as many doglegs. This is a picturesque course with many undulations using the shape of the land of this former rubber plantation. The signature hole is the ninth on the West course, a delightful par four dogleg to the right, the tee shot has to dissect two lakes, with the Tudor design clubhouse providing a superb backdrop for the second shot to the green.
Templer Park Golf Club
Enchanting – with a sting in the tail
18 holes (closed Mondays), 45 minutes from the city centre
This is a very scenic course at the foot of a 300m limestone cliff that looms up out of the jungle. In addition to top quality golf you are rewarded with enjoying the company of monkeys, colourful birds all in an enchanting environment. Designed by Jumbo Osaki the course is under Japanese management and is well maintained. The 18th is a good finishing hole, tempting anyone who is chasing the game to take the ‘tiger’ line over the lake.
Saujana Golf & Country Club
Love it or hate it – Malaysia’s number 1
2 x 18 holes, 30 minutes from the city centre
Considered by many to be the best in Malaysia and arguably the toughest test of golf in Asia is the Palm Course. Also known as the ‘cobra’ course, this Robert Fream layout with its tight undulating fairways, a variety of hazards and large sloping greens can drive a golfer to distraction. Higher handicappers will prefer the Bunga Raya course, but this too is not for the faint hearted, particularly the final three holes which are regarded as Saujana’s ‘Amen Corner’.
Other Courses in Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, 2 x 18 holes (18 floodlit)
Exclusive course in an enviable location in the city area. There are some very tricky holes on both courses and the West Course in particular will reward the careful player, the East course does allow you to open up and hit the ball harder, with more forgiving fairways. Only open to non-members on weekdays.
Royal Sengalor, 2 x 18 holes
One of Malaysia’s oldest courses. Immaculately maintained, relatively flat and very challenging. Only open to non-members on weekdays.
Tropicana, 2 x 18 holes (18 floodlit)
Both courses are superbly shaped and landscaped over undulating terrain. Great expense has gone into making the drainage efficient enough to cope with even the heaviest downpour.
