Chaka Pairs Winners - Apr 2005
Christine and Kevin Quinn from South Winchester win our April 2005 "Mixed Pairs Tournament" in Mauritius.
Mauritius proved to be the perfect venue for the April Chaka Travel Mixed Pairs Golf Tournament, during which ten couples competed against each other, over a period of two weeks, for the honour of being the "Mixed Pairs Champions".
Held at the superb 5-star Belle Mare Plage Resort the five competitive rounds were held on the resorts two 18-hole championship courses, the Links and the Legend courses. A variety of "pairs" formats were played with prizes being offered each day for the best pair, closest to the pin and the longest drives.
Designed by South African champion, Hugh Baiocchi, the Legends course covers 70 hectares in the middle of an ancient deer reserve and stag still watch golfers from under the trees. Opened in 1994, Legends is ranked today as the "Best Golf Resort Course outside of Asia and America, in the world."
The par 71/5927 Links course, designed by Peter Alliss and Rodney White, differs from the Legends, in that it has wide rolling fairways, less water and less tough rough!
Mauritian weather was absolutely perfect so when not playing golf or out practicing, the group was able to explore the island or relax and enjoy the beach and the many facilities offered by the Belle Mare Plage Hotel.
Chaka golfers also used the opportunity to have a fun day at the One&Only Le Touessrok Championship Golf course, which is situated on its very own tropical island! Playing at over 6476 metres, this course has nine lakes with a number of holes requiring tee shots across sea inlets to the fairways. Designed by Bernhard Langer, Le Touessrok challenges advanced players while remaining exciting and playable for recreational golfers. The greens are mainly small and undulating, requiring precise approach shots.
The standard of the golf was high with couples playing consistently well and winning at least one prize each. After a nail biting finish, Chaka Travel's Mixed Pairs Champions were Christine and Kevin Quinn from South Winchester.
They were closely followed by Colin and Melanie Baker from Hankley Common, who narrowly beat Liz and Alan Bailey from also from South Winchester.
Competition may have been fierce but many new friendships were made and the group spirit was wonderful. This became especially evident when a number of Chaka golfers entered and won many of the prizes on the final day in the hotel’s Friday competition.
