Review of the Best Golfing Holidays Destinations
Chaka Travel have been arranging golf holidays since 1994 and the MD,
Mark Marais shares some of his thoughts on some of the fantastic golf destinations
and fabulous resorts he has visited over the years. For the more adventurous
golfer the choice of new golfing destinations continues to expand around the
world with new golf courses opening up regularly.
Here are Mark's top picks for long haul and short haul golfing destinations.
Long Haul Golfing Destinations
Mauritius is hard to beat as a year-round golfing destination with temperate
weather and great golf. With free green fees for hotel residents and a great
slection of 5 star and 4 star resorts, Mauritius is an ideal golfing destination.
The island boasts 7 great golf resorts, and some of the world’s finest golf courses.
Some of our favourite courses are the Four Seasons course at Anahita where Ernie Els
has done a great job, particularly with regards to providing fairways generous enough
for the occasional wayward drive!
The Heritage Golf Club course at Heritage and Telfair
resorts has really matured and is now as good as any other on the island.
The island course at Le Touessrok is one of the most scenic golf courses and the 10
minute boat trip to the island makes this an experience to remember.
For best value for golfers, Chaka Travel recommends the Belle Mare Plage which
offers free green fees on its two magnificent 18-hole championship golf courses,
the Legends next to the hotel and the Links just 5 minutes drive from the hotel.
At Belle Mare Plage the Legend course offers a stern test, whilst not
particularly long the course is tricky and has a lot of water! The Links course
is more forgiving but again a really top quality layout.

Short Haul Golfing Destinations
For anyone looking for winter golfing destinations within a short hop of the UK,
Madeira, Tenerife, Turkey, Morocco and Cyprus now have some great value offers.
With a pleasant subtropical climate and within 3 and a half hours of the UK,
Madeira is an ideal destination for a short golfing break. Athough part of the Euro
zone and now updated with a new motorway and excellent new 5 Star Madeira Hotels it still retains
it Portuguese character evident in the architecture and the availability of authentic
Portuguese cuisine. As a small island, hotel transfer times are generally short,
for example it is a mere 20 minutes from arrival in Funchal to transfer to the 5 Star
Madeira Melia Mare - a beautiful hotel in the heart of the Lido district and
right next to the famous Lido pools.
Madeira offers a choice of 2 courses on the island and one on nearby Porto Santo.
Palheiro with magnificent views over Funchal, Santo da Serra the home of the Madeira

With year round playing conditions, and golf courses to suit all golf handicaps,
Tenerife is the perfect place for beginners and pros alike. In the centre of Playa de
Las Américas, one of the most famous holiday resorts in the south of the island,
the 18 hole Golf Las Américas stands out for its fantastic location in a natural
amphitheatre facing the sea with superb ocean views of the island of La Gomera.
We recommend the elegant 5 star Hotel Las Madrigueras, located right beside the
Golf Las Americas golf course.
Golf resorts have blossomed in the Belek area of Southern Turkey in the last few years.
These are served by low cost direct, daily flights to Antalya. Our recommendation
is for the Lykia LinksGolf Antalya, a stunning golf complex on the shores of the Mediterranean.
The 18-hole course set in the sand dunes by the sea was designed by celebrated golf architect
Perry Dye (son of Pete Dye).
Mark and Stuart at Chaka Travel have visited the resort and enjoyed the challenge.
Mark commented: ‘Having played the course we can endorse it very highly, whilst
like most links courses it is reasonably challenging but at no time did we find
it punitive. In true links fashion the course has very firm greens that require
accurate approach shots. The quilted fairways have a sense of famous courses in Scotland
and an assortment of pot bunkers guard the greens and require reasonably accurate
placement on the fairways if you are to score well. We have held pro-am’s at Lykia
Links and the course has been very well received by players of all standards.
The seventh is a superb dogleg left around a lake which with the right breeze
is driveable but a watery fate awaits those who bite of more than they can chew!’
