Belle Mare Plage The Links
The two championship golf courses, The Legend & The Links are of international standard. Each 18 holes is a real challenge for professional and amateurs alike, recognised by the PGA and various other federations, these courses were conceived to annually host a number of international competitions including the Mauritius Open.
The second Championship Golf Course, designed by Rodney Wright & Peter Alliss opened in November 2002. This 18-hole links course was conceived as a result of the success and demand encountered by Hotels Constance first course, "The Legend".
Sitting beneath the clubhouse that faces the setting sun, the course measures 5,927 m and has a par of 71. Equipped with a practice fairway, this 18-hole course is set in a location that seems to have been naturally created for the purpose. The course is not a true links course but has many features of a traditional links layout, particularly elevated greens. The course is more forgiving than the Legends but we at Chaka Travel have found it to be pretty challenging but fair. Buggies are compulsory on this course and cost approx. £14 per person (not per car) for 18 holes and this includes tees, towels and water. Caddies are not available.
1st hole - 360 mts Par 4
A gentle opening hole with a stunning panoramic view. The tee shot should be placed on the left side of the fairway to leave a mid iron second shot to a slightly elevated green.
2nd hole - 512 mts Par 5
A double dogleg, which will offer the big hitter a chance to reach the green in two shots, if he decides to take on the challenge of a blind shot over a volcanic outcrop. The safe way will be to lay up at the corner of the second dogleg leaving a pitch into the green.
3rd hole - 342 mts Par 4
Slight dogleg left. After a drive to a generous landing area the player is faced with a second shot across water. The first hole to be played into the prevailing win.
4th hole - 312 mts Par 4
The 4th runs the same direction as the 3rd and the 2nd shot is played steeply uphill to a raised green. Always take one club more than you think!
5th hole - 370 mts Par 4
A gentle dogleg left, where the drive should be placed to the right of the fairway to leave an easier second shot with a middle iron.
6th hole - 504 mts Par 5
This second par five is played back into the wind. The longer hitters may be able to reach the green in two, however it is protected by a large volcanic outcrop.
7th hole - 127 mts Par 3
First of the Par 3's, this is a short iron played to a green cut into the natural rocky landscape.
8th hole - 340 mts Par 4
This is a medium length dogleg right, the drive must be kept to the left side of the fairway to give a clear shot into the green.
9th hole - 146 mts Par 3
Second of the par three's and one which plays much longer than it's length as the hole is straight up hill. One of the trickiest greens on the course with three levels.
10 hole - 518 mts Par 5
The start of the back nine is a long downhill par five, the ball must be strategically placed after the second shot to allow access to a welcoming green which slopes from back to front.
11 hole - 146 mts Par 3
First of the Par 3's with water. The lake winds its way up the left side of the green to catch any ball slightly hooked. A large green which offers some fiendish pin positions.
12 hole - 414 mts Par 4
One of the toughest holes on the course, a good drive is needed to clear the uphill portion of the fairway. The second shot must avoid the water on the right and the large tree guarding the left side of the green.
13 hole - 360 mts Par 4
A good drive to a generous fairway will leave a mid iron to a green surrounded on three sides by water.
14 hole - 135 mts Par 3
The last of the short holes has water short and right of the green. Played into the prevailing wind this could be a card wrecker.
15 hole - 354 mts Par 4
An almost straight par four which offers views of the lagoon on the left hand side. An undulating green will protect par.
16 hole - 355 mts Par 4
This severe dogleg right deserves it stroke rating of 2. The drive must be long and true to the left side of the fairway to afford a view of the green. Anything less than perfect will leave a blind second shot over a valley to the green.
17 hole - 285 mts Par 4
A hole the big hitters may want to drive but any ball left of the green will be severly penalised. The sensible play is to the right of the fairway bunker leaving a pitch to the green.
18 hole - 362 mts Par 4
A semi blind tee shot should be left of centre to leave a clear second shot over water to the home green which is situated next to an old lime kiln. A par four here will take you happily on to the Clubhouse and 19th hole.
Belle Mare Plage The Legend
Teeing off at the par three 17th hole is a feast for the eyes and a test for the nerves. You are playing across the lagoon, but we have found that it is actually not a difficult as the green is fairly large, the sting in the tail is that the green is also tricky and a par score can be hard to achieve if you end up a long way from the hole. The course has a lot of water and thick scrub so take plenty of balls but having played it on many occasions we love this course. This is a walking course and buggies are optional and cost approx. £20 per person.. Caddies are also available and cost around £3 to £5 for 18-holes.
1st hole - 304 mts Par 4
An easy short par 4 to begin with but care must be taken with the drive as there is water on both sides of the wide fairway. Most players may elect to play a long iron or a 3 wood which will still leave them a short iron shot to the green. This is a very real chance to start the round off with a birdie.
2nd hole - 345 mts Par 4
A challenging drive is required to a dogleg right tree lined fairway. The pin position will determine the real difficulty of the hole as the green is guarded by two large bunkers and a lake on the right to catch the stray second shot.
3rd hole - 150 mts Par 3
With the prevailing wind and a large sloping green, a good club selection will be needed to ensure par.
4th hole - 389 mts Par 4
A birdie chance for big hitters. The hole can be shortened by keeping the ball as far left as possible but beware of the water that protects both sides of the fairway. The green is guarded by three bunkers but a chip and a putt for birdie is very possible.
5th hole - 389 mts Par 4
The most difficult hole on the course. A very straight drive is the only solution to avoid the water hazards and to set up a challenging long iron to a well protected green.
6th hole - 457 mts Par 5
A straightforward driving hole with water protecting the right-hand side of the fairway from the tee. The green can be made in two but there is very little landing area and three bunkers lie in wait for the less than perfect shot. Normally a safe second with an iron played short of the green and a good pitch is the safest way to try and make birdie.
7th hole - 177 mts Par 3
This is the most challenging par 3 on the course. Normally against the wind a long iron will be needed to make the green which is protected on both sides by a bunker.
8th hole - 357 mts Par 4
The tee shot must be played to the left-hand side of the fairway to have an easier line into the green. This is definitely a birdie chance.
9th hole - 344 mts Par 4
A fairly short hole but it needs to be taken seriously. A good drive will leave a short approach to an elevated green. Any ball missing the putting surface will leave the player faced with a bunker, water or having to negotiate a difficult slope.
10th hole - 340 mts Par 4
This right dogleg hole is protected by a pond on the right and a bunker on the left at the bend in the fairway. Once the tee shot has been negotiated, this is a definite birdie chance.
11th hole - 153 mts Par 3
Although there is water between the tree and the green, the real difficulty will be the large, challenging, undulating green set into the trees. A well-judged tee shot is required.
12 hole - 364 mts Par 4
Leaving the driver in the bag could be the best solution on this most attractive par 4. A well-positioned long iron or 3 wood will leave you a mid to short iron over the water to a large but narrow green.
13th hole - 457 mts Par 5
Certainly a hole for long hitters. Although not the longest par 5 on the course it does have a very long carry over water to an elevated fairway. The fairway narrows as it approaches the green with a bunker guarding the right hand side. A great risk and reward hole.
14th hole - 376 mts Par 4
This is a very tight drive with a bunker ready to catch the more ambitious player. Keeping the ball on the fairway is the secret to this hole that turns slightly to the right leaving a medium iron shot to the green. Two bunkers keep guard at this difficult sloping green.
15th hole - 343 mts Par 4
The tee shot again is very important at this hole. There is a large tree situated on the corner of this left-hand dogleg which demands the drive be placed to the righthand side of the fairway. The green is slightly angled to the left of the player so make sure you hit enough club for the second shot. Keep an eye out for the water.
16th hole - 346 mts Par 4
A straightforward par 4 that will always be regarded as a birdie opportunity. It has a most attractive teeing area that is surrounded by water and gives a marvellous example of the course’s characteristics.
17th hole - 152 mts Par 3
A most spectacular par 3 with views overlooking the mountains and the sea. A mid to short iron over water will send the ball to a large undulating green guarded by two bunkers. The hardest part of this hole is not to 3 putt.
18th hole - 458 mts Par 5
A great finishing hole. This dogleg par 5 demands a good long straight drive, preferably kept to the right-hand side of the fairway. From here, it will require a lot of courage, even for the boldest of players, to attempt the green in two. The large green which is set on a peninsular just below the clubhouse, is protected by three bunkers, one of which is set behind the green to catch the over hit shot. All the trials and tribulations can be easily seen from the Deer Hunter restaurant and bar.
