The Zimbali golf course was designed by Tom Weiskopf – his first in Africa – where he has incorporated natural features such as indigenous trees, vegetation and some beautiful wetland areas, whilst still managing to challenge players of all handicaps. The course is an outstanding choice for golf holidays in South Africa.
A truly spectacular golf estate which offers up sweeping panoramas of the surrounding, ocean, hills and forest, Zimbali Country Club, opened in 1996 and has firmly cemented itself as one of the area’s favourites. Located just outside of Ballito on KwaZulu-Natal’s Dolphin Coast, Zimbali occupies some of the finest estate in the country.
The course itself takes you along a front nine, links layout before turning and blending into the coastal forest and wetlands for the back nine, providing a very different challenge and an opportunity to come back at your opponent.
Mount Edgecombe Country Club Estate comprises three entities: the Country Club, Estate One and Estate Two. Estate Two is the larger and younger of the two golfing estates. Each estate has its own 18-hole golf course amidst the pristine green-roofed residences, a must stop place on your golf holiday in South Africa.
Mount Edgecombe Course One is a parkland layout, and this extremely attractive golf course has hosted numerous amateur as well as professional tournaments and will therefore test any level of golfer. With four sets of tees, the course is playable by golfers of any handicap.
Estate Two is located in the pulse of Mount Edgecombe in close proximity to Umhlanga’s premium shopping malls, beautiful beaches and private schools. The N2 highway also allows for convenient travel to the airport and other destinations.
Situated in the heart of one of South Africa’s largest “melting pot” cities, Durban, lies the Royal Durban Golf Course. Designed by Bob Grimsdell, it is among those rare golf courses that are located in the middle of a horseracing track, a unique place for golf holidays in South Africa.
Although the course appears flat and featureless at first glance, and isn’t very long either, it is not without its fair share of challenges and clever hazards to ensure a thrilling round of golf. The prevailing winds, combined with the lack of trees (to avoid obscuring a view of the race track), have created an unbelievable challenge that can be fully realized only in the middle of a round.
Named after the mountain range that runs along the garden route, this parkland resort course has aesthetically pleasing design features such as rivulets and colourful gardens. Like its neighbour, the Montague, it is in magnificent condition year round and is a prime location to play golf in South Africa.
Although set in the same surroundings as its better known counterparts, the Outeniqua has developed an individual personality rivalling the others. Excellent water features and creeks interspersed with uphill and downhill challenges and excellent bunkering (recently renovated) are all augmented in the charm and challenge by the colourful flora to be seen throughout the course.
The views from the fairways, the knowledgeable caddies and the quality of the course combine to make this a must play course when on a golf holiday in South Africa.
This modern course with a mature parkland feel, is considered one of the best-conditioned courses in South Africa. It is cleverly designed, picturesque, and presents an enjoyable challenge to all levels of golfers. One of our favourite courses, to play here you have to stay be a hotel resident. Serious golfers will love Fancourt and it is the ideal base for South Africa golf holidays.
The Montagu course is named after the mountain pass of the same name and is part of the original 27-hole design at Fancourt by the legendary Gary Player in the early 90s. This classic tree-lined parklands layout underwent a major facelift in 2005 under renowned Scottish golf architect David McLay Kidd.
The upgrade saw two completely new holes, the 1st and the 9th, redefined bunkers and greens and the introduction of several water features such as the dam. Celebrated for its immaculate, round the year conditioning, the Montagu GC is currently ranked at #6 in South Africa, prime location for golf holidays in South Africa (Golf Digest, 2014). The signature hole is the Par-3 17th, reminiscent of the 12th hole at Augusta National, the permanent home of the US Masters.
Designed by the legendary Gary Player and considered to be his design masterpiece, the Links at Fancourt recreates the classic courses of Scotland and Ireland in a typically South African setting with the majestic Outeniqua mountains serving as a dramatic backdrop.
Conceived on a former airport site, the resulting aura is that of a pure links layout in spite of its inland location, with only the climate and the mountains serving as reminders that the golfer is not in the British Isles. Having hosted the 2003 Presidents Cup (which ended in a dramatic tie between Tiger Woods and Ernie Els with Nelson Mandela in attendance) and the 2005 SAA Open, playing at The Links is a very, very special experience.
Possible the most difficult course in South Africa and also one of the most exclusive. If you want to include it in your South Africa golf holidays in Fancourt we recommend booking well in advance.
The Pinnacle Point Golf Course, co-designed by renowned golf architect Peter Matkovich and professional golfer Darren Clarke, stretches along four kilometres of spectacular coastline and boasts dramatic cliff-side holes as well as a virgin beachfront.
Awe inspiring views are a given with the stunning ocean visible from every hole, stunning location for golf holidays in South Africa. The emerald green fairways and tees offer a perfect surface for making shots and the bent grass greens will ensure a challenging and entertaining game.
The seven holes perched precariously along the cliff edge not only intimidate but also seduce the golfer with both their challenges and their beauty, and are justifiably some of the world’s most photographed holes.
