One of the elements that makes golf so different amongst sports is the beauty and variety of its playing fields. These days golf courses come in many shapes and forms - ancient, modern, links, mountain, ocean, desert and swamp. Unique and unusual sites for golf courses are few and far between but now prepare for something unlike anything you have experienced before and add to the above a new description of a golf course - the island course.

In commenting on the site, course designer and two-time Masters champion, Bernhard Langer had this to say, "I have had the opportunity to play professionally on a global scale. Le Touessrok Golf Course occupies its own island, surrounded by a spectacular coral reef. Add in the azure blue waters lapping at white sand beaches and the backdrop of an ancient volcanic mountain and I don't know of any golf sites that compare. A truly unique golfing experience with 18 holes of ocean views".

Golf at the Le Touessrok, Mauritius

Indeed the golfing experience at Le Touessrok promises to be all this - new, unique and distinctive. The island lies a short and gentle 10-minute boat ride across the bay from Le Touessrok. The fresh sea breeze and gentle ocean swells are just the perfect way to prepare one for the golfing challenge ahead.

Golf at the Le Touessrok, Mauritius

And what lies ahead is a Championship course measuring 6476 metres (or 7082 yards) from the back tees. If you're willing to take up the 'championship' challenge and play from the tips be sure to bring your "A" game. Your choices are many and varied with almost every hole offering risk and reward options. But at all times remember that designer Bernhard Langer is renowned as one of the game's most disciplined strategists and taking the safe, more conservative route, will often pay handsome dividends. High handicap golfers will find the course very challenging and the back tees provide a very stern challenge for the advanced player.

The spectacular opening hole introduces one straight away to the look and feel of this outstanding golf course. A good tee shot down the right side of the fairway must carry a natural pond and volcanic lava rock face which was uncovered during the construction of the course. The green at the par four, 5th hole is guarded by one of the prettiest tidal pools found on Le Touessrok, while the 6th at 601 metres is the longest hole on the course playing along the full length of the island's spectacular white beach. The 7th hole provides players with their first glimpse of the mangrove forests that surround the west or inland side of the island. Even at only 114 metres the short 8th is no pushover. This little gem of a par three requires a demanding tee shot to a green perched high above the fairway and surrounded by mangrove trees and volcanic lava outcrops.

Golf at the Le Touessrok, Mauritius

The par five, 11th hole plays towards the sea and doglegs sharply to the west giving players their first views of the stunning mountains on the mainland. Take a moment or two to enjoy the seaview from this elevated tee. It is often said that every great course design includes a short par four that tempts the long hitter to go for the green. The 14th measures just 308 metres from the tips and the courageous or maybe reckless player might well have a go with his tee shot. But be careful of the mangrove forest, as a ball going left will almost certainly be lost. The tees at the short par four 16th Hole stretch out along a ridge that dramatically changes the direction of play on the hole. From the back tee there is a daunting carry over the mangroves while from the forward tees a straight shot will be rewarded with a relatively simple approach to the green. The green sits nestled in a small tree-lined dell protected in front by two small volcanic lava outcrops. The tee shot at the 17th must carry what appears to be a sea of treetops but is of course a mangrove bay. The mangroves come into play on the last hole as well, as they must be negotiated on both the drive and the approach shot. Because of the island nature of the course one might assume that it is fairly flat, in fact, the opposite is true with one of the main features being the dramatic changes in elevation.

Sited on the highest point on the island and overlooking the 18th hole is the club house, which bears the same architectural theme as that of Le Touessrok and includes a fully stocked Professional Golf Shop, locker room facilities, lounge and 68-seater restaurant and casual bar with 180 degree views of the golf course, mountain backdrop and surrounding ocean. And for those who feel their game might need some fine-tuning there is a Golf Academy and practice area with five target greens, as well as putting and chipping greens.

Golf at the Le Touessrok, Mauritius

And if your game is not up to scratch on the day, worry not, just sit back and enjoy the experience. The sheer drama of holes played over mangrove forests, the spectacular sea views, or the more intimate discovery of new and never seen before lush island flora, all part of the experience of playing a round of golf at the Le Touessrok Golf Course

    Our View...

"A friendlier course well I use the word “lightly” as doesn’t have the same amount of water in play but can be tricky and especially on the back 9! The course again is very well set up with more room for error of the tee boxes and which is great for the higher handicapped golfers. Also another difference is I find the greens can be very tricky and also makes you think of every approach shot from the fairways. It again is a lovely course maybe not as scenic as the legends and also not as flat! So always advisable to get a buggy." Stuart Thompson - Chaka Travel Mauritius Golf Specialist

    Stuart's favourite hole: 10th

What a way to start the back 9! Tee off from an elevated box with out of bounds on the right and trees on the left it is very tricky drive and also on your second shot you have to content with the lake coming in from the left towards a very tight green!

    Mark's favourite hole: 18th

A challenging par 4 that can quickly turn a close game on its head, I speak from experience having had to pay for drinks after putting one in the water. Not a long par 4 but definitely a treacherous one if the winds blowing!

  • Belle Mare Plage The Legend

Opened in 1994 Constance Belle Mare Plage's first championship golf course set along one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius Designed by South African champion Hugh Baiocchi 18 hole championship golf course laid in the heart of an indigenous forest Built according to USPGA specifications & Tif Dwarf grasses for perfection free green fee for guest staying in our hotels.

Teeing off at the par three 17th hole is a feast for the eyes and a test for the nerves. You are playing across the lagoon, but we have found that it is actually not a difficult as the green is fairly large, the sting in the tail is that the green is also tricky and a par score can be hard to achieve if you end up a long way from the hole. The course has a lot of water and thick scrub so take plenty of balls but having played it on many occasions we love this course. This is a walking course and buggies are optional and cost approx. £20 per person. Caddies are also available and cost around £3 to £5 for 18-holes.

    Our View...

"The course itself is a brilliant test of golf as you have to choose your club selection wisely from the tee box as most of the fairways can be a tight and not a big lot of room for error! Also to add to the challenge is “water” on nearly every hole to give it that full championship feel rather than just a holiday golf course that people may think it might be. It’s a fantastic walking course and very scenic with herds of deer quietly wandering the course." Stuart Thompson - Chaka Travel Mauritius Golf Specialist

    Stuart's favourite hole: 4th

A fantastic par 5 with a tee shot that you have to work the ball from right to left as you have water on the right and left for the length of the hole, making the first 2 shots a challenge.

    Mark's favourite hole: 18th

Having played the iconic 17th you end your round on the superb par 5 18th. Water to the right off the tee box means driving to the left of the fairway and having to lay up, a more aggressive line allows the bigger hitters to attack a larger very well protected green.

For the statistically minded the par 72 course is designed in two loops, each consisting of 9 holes. The outward nine is 3190m in length while the inward loop has a length of 3250m. The four par threes vary in length from 140m to 200m, the par fours from 320m to 430m and the four par fives from 490m to 520m.

    A championship golf course

This is the first golf course designed and built by a South African on the island of Mauritius. The land was originally a sugar estate and many of the landscaping and design features on the course, soft contours and the use of Vettiver and Mondo grass, were created to blend in with and simulate the sugar cane fields which still surround the course.

    Holes: 11th

hole 11 at the Golf Du Chateau

This hole plays into the prevailing wind to a generous landing area split by 2 bunkers. Up the left side makes the approach shot longer but safer, up the right plays shorter but brings the water hazard and bunker more into play.

    Holes: 13th

hole 13 at the Golf Du Chateau

The 13th is a classic short hole over water maximising the view of the grove of trees.

    Holes: 15th

hole 15 at the Golf Du Chateau

This short hole plays downhill over acres of waving Mondo grass and requires an accurate shot to avoid the bunkers and land it pin-high.

    Holes: 16th

hole 16 at the Golf Du Chateau

This 2-shotter feeds drives towards the river and trees where there is much more space than the view from the tee suggests. The approach shot is to a 3-tiered green, protected by bunkers on the left, placing demand on length and accuracy.

    Holes: 18th

hole 18 at the Golf Du Chateau

The par-5 closing hole plays short if the prevailing wind is blowing presenting a birdie opportunity, but not without risk. Water on the left and a series of bunkers on the right are ready to receive any wayward approaches to the undulating green.

  • Four Seasons Golf Club at Anahita

The newest championship golf course on Mauritius, and one that could quite quickly become the best on the island, is the Ernie Els designed Anahita golf course, part of the Anahita Resort on the island's east coast. par 72 layout can play to 6,828 metres (7,467 yards) from the back tees, or to a variety of shorter distances from different sets of tees right down to 5,588 metres (6,111 yards) from the gold tees, or 4,971 metres (5,436 yards) from the ladies' tees. With wide fairways and friendly rough the course will not be too hard for average golfers, depending on which tees they choose to use, but the further back you go the more challenging Anahita becomes for even the very best of golfers. Els himself, currently ranked third in the world, teeing it up from the back at the short eighth, a par three that plays down towards the Indian Ocean usually into the teeth of a stiff breeze, could not reach the green here, 233 metres away, even with a full blooded driver. Deep bunkering, on the fairways and around the greens (in some of the greenside bunkers you can barely see the top of the flag let alone the bottom), makes for a major hazard whilst large, natural ponds come into play on three others. The Indian Ocean also comes into play occasionally with six oceanside holes, most notably at the par three fifth where, from the back tee, you face a tough 200 metre carry to the green across the sea.
