  • Black Mountain Golf Club

Quite simply a world class golf course in a stunning setting.

Designed to test the skills of the world's best, many of whom played here in the Royal Trophy between Europe and Asia in 2011, Black Mountain Golf Club is simply stunning. Surrounded on three sides by the black mountains themselves, and retaining all the natural creeks and contours of the site upon which it was built, this is simply one of the very best course in the area. Although designed for the pros, us amateurs needn't be too daunted - the fairways are actually more generous for a shorter drive, narrowing further down where Tiger would be landing his ball. When it comes to the blind holes and severe dog-legs however, you might find yourself paying for an overly conservative approach off the tee.

The greens are comfortable large but generally well protected by water and superbly sculpted bunkers. There are some great holes. At the par-5 6th, the John Daly's of this world can cut the water and reach the peninsula green in two, whilst us mere mortals have to play in regulation, hitting around a big loop such that we almost end up where we begun. The signature 11th is a par-3 where the island green is in front of a beautiful waterfall. A nightmare from the back tees, even front the front you need to be landing on the green or signing for a bogey or worse. The clubhouse is exceptional, providing panoramic views of the whole course while you sample the excellent food having shopped in the most extensively stocked pro shop in the area.

The green fees might be above average at Black Mountain Golf Club, but the experience more than justifies the expense.

  • The Banyan Golf Club

An excellent new addition to Hua Hin. A challenging course with spectacular views and a first rate experience all round.

The latest addition to Hua Hin's growing number of quality golf courses, Banyan Golf Club is set in a breathtaking location near the gulf of Thailand, surrounded by mountainous scenery and lush plant life. The views from the back nine are particularly memorable. Six different tee boxes mean everyone can set their own challenge, but the cleverly located water hazards and waste bunkers mean that even from the front tees it is no easy ride. If you can find the fairways you will generally get good lies from which to approach the fast, well manicured greens. The standout hole is probably the 10th, where a dramatic tee shot must carry shrubs and wasteland whilst avoiding woods to the left. If you can avoid the lottery of large rocks on the fairway, a tough second shot plays uphill to an elevated green which falls away awkwardly.

The downsides are small, but worth mentioning: most of the trees have yet to reach maturity so the course plays quite open, and some of the caddies remain inexperienced. Both of these things will improve with time however, and in any case with the facilities and management being first rate you quickly forget any minor niggles.

  • Sea Pines Golf Course

Some of the best holes in Hua Hin at this spectacular Army-owned links course.

Recently opened amidst much fanfare in 2010, Sea Pine Golf Course is located right on the beach and comes across like a tropical version of a scottish links course. The pine trees from which the course takes its name are much in evidence, and together with the mountains and the ocean provide a stunning backdrop to a course whose difficulty is inextricably linked to the strength of the wind coming in from the Gulf of Thailand. The par-5 12th provides a memorably tricky proposition from the tee, with water along the right hand side and a fairway bunker seemingly positioned at the exact point where a drive would land. You can avoid it by playing safe or getting lucky, but if you choose the former option you will struggle to make the green in regulation. The wind really come to the fore at the last three holes which are pretty special, lying right next to the beach; the breeze makes landing your ball on the narrow fairway of the 16th a real challenge, but we really enjoyed sending our balls out towards the sea and watching the wind bring them back.

The signature 17th with breathtaking panoramic views is a par-3 over a large lake to a well protected sloping green, and the final hole involves a 200 yard carry over a canal and ranks as the hardest on the course. The land itself is owned by the Royal Thai Army and designed by one of their own, meaning that Army officers get priority so make sure to book a tee time ahead of time, because this is a course you should definitely play as part of your Hua Hin golf holiday. We haven't yet played the newer nine, opened in 2005 and designed by the renowned Schmidt & Curley, but apparently it's even more challenging than the Golden Bear's creation.

  • Springfield Royal Country Club

The Golden Bear was at the top of his game in designing this stunning course. Beware: if you are prone to slicing to the ball, be prepared to be punished for it.

The recent host of the Thailand Open and another classic design by the legendary Jack Nicklaus, Springfield Royal Country Club boasts an immaculately maintained 27 holes of sumptuous golf surrounded by dramtic rocky hills. As with a lot of Nicklaus's courses, you'll become intimately familiar with the waste bunkers and water hazards if you have a tendency to fade or slice, particularly on the back nine where tiredness only exacerbates the problem. After a straightfoward shot from the the first tee, the size of the challenge ahead of you slowly becomes clear with a very long tricky to reach green giving you plenty of opportunity to drop a shot straight away. While not being a particularly long course, it's a brave soul or a masochist who takes on this course from the black tips so unless that sounds like you, we would suggest any of the other 4 options from the tee which allow you to set the appropriate level of difficulty for your game. The 9th is probably the best hole, a short par-5 where your tee shot to a narrow fairway between the trees needs to be followed up by a second that avoids a lake and a third to an island green that slopes away at the edges meaning you are either land on the centre of the green of go fishing. A par is really something to cherish here.

Away from the course itself, Springfield Royal Country Club offers first class facilities; an elevated clubhouse decked out in marble and granite provides great views of the course, and we particularly enjoyed the novelty of grabbing a beer at the locker room bar, where you will find nobody complaining about the course marshal or the caddies who are by and large excellent. We haven't yet played the newer nine, opened in 2005 and designed by the renowned Schmidt & Curley, but apparently it's even more challenging than the Golden Bear's creation.

  • Palm Hills Resort & Country Club

Get great value for money at one of the easier Hua Hin courses.

Once Hua Hin's only international standard golf course, Palm Hills Golf Club & Residence slowly slipped down the pecking order as quality courses proliferated in the area. Recently however it has undergone something of a renaissance, the flat wide fairways and cleverly positioned water hazards now being in immaculate condition. While getting to the greens is fairly straightforward, the relaid putting surfaces which are amongst the best in the country are lightning quick and deceptive, making your choice of caddy fairly important.

Despite the palm trees and brightly coloured trees and shrubs the course has a scottish links feel, with great views of the Gulf of Thailand from the hilly back nine. The best holes are 10 through 14, with the signature 11th being a long uphill par-3 into the sea breeze where it is easy to underclub. The 14th is our favourite though, a 321 yard par-4 dog-leg with water to the left and across the fairway. Cleverly located bunkers to the right prevent you from playing it too safe, but it's a relatively short hole so you can afford an iron off the tee if you are more accurate than with a driver.

While the staff are well trained and friendly, particularly the caddies, the changing rooms have seen better days and the pro shop is basic and expensive, never a good combination. Nonetheless, a round at Palm Hills Golf Club & Residence will prove to be good fun, and with already reasonable green fees being subject to discounts on weekdays, in low season and during the August Golf Festival it really is great value for money.

  • Royal Hua Hin Golf Course

An enjoyable scenic round of golf awaits at the grand old lady of Thai golf.

Originally opened in 1924 to entertain the Scottish engineers helping build the Thai railway system, Royal Hua Hin Golf Course is the grand old lady of Thai golf and the oldest course in Thailand. Set between rocky hills and working around the natural terrain, the course is indicative of traditional British golf design in its length and difficulty. While the bunkers and greens are in tip top condition, irrigation was not taken into consideration back in the 20s so the fairways, which are rarely watered, often leave something to be desired with occasional bald patches or muddy areas depending on the season. On the upside, they are very hard allowing some very long drives thanks to the distance the ball will run, and lined by fully mature trees which you will not find on the more recent additions to Hua Hin's burgeoning cannon of golf courses. Some of the more elevated holes provide spectacular views of the Gulf and the city centre, and an impressive Thai temple forms the backdrop to the tricky par-3 14th. Best of all, the old Hua Hin Bangkok - Singapore railway station which sits next to the recently upgraded clubhouse creates a majestic feel to the club.

Setting aside the holes memorable for the sights you can behold from the tee, the standout is probably the 9th, a par-4 running downhill towards the clubhouse which requires a lengthy drive in order to carry the wasteland in front of the tee; you can go over or between the two massive bushes that stand in your way. You're best off keeping to the right as that will offer you the optimal route into a green protected by bunkers and trees.

While the condition of the course will bug some people, if you can ignore that then Royal Hua Hin Golf Course is a pleasurable, scenic affair that requires a well developed all-round game in order to score well. Like the sound of this course?

  • The Imperial Lake View Resort & Golf Club

A wide variety of challenges over 36 holes of championship level golf.

Nestled in the foothills near Kaeng Krachan National Park lies the Roger Packard-designed Imperial Lake View Hotel & Golf Club, 36 holes of sumptuous golf in a natural, relaxing environment. To the main championship course, comprising the Mountain (A) and Lake (B) nines, has been added two additional nines, one in a refreshingly unusual desert style (C) and a fourth (yup, you guessed it: D) fairly unimaginatively based on scottish links. The main A-B course is split by a large lake, and the streams that supply it run through and along many of the holes. With its mature trees, severe dog-legs and occasional blind shots, on some holes you can find yourself struggling to make par no matter what your handicap. Thankfully there are enough easy holes where you can make back your inevitable dropped shots at the toughies. The Desert nine is a "thinking golfer's" course, and often rated as the best set of holes in the region. Careful planning and some strategic shot making are required in order to tame t

  • The Majestic Creek Country Club

This mainstay of the Hua Hin region is a tough but satisfying course that always seems to have a water hazard waiting to catch you out.

Once rated the best course in Hua Hin but nowadays up against some pretty stiff competition for that title, Majestic Creek Country Club nonetheless remains a favourite amongst locals and expats alike who are drawn by its stunning mountainous location. It's easy to get complacent after the first few fairly short holes, but you'll suddenly find yourself struggling to reach the well maintained greens in regulation or carry the lakes and streams that wind their way through the course. The fairways are firm enough to give good roll and 'fluffy' enough for your ball to sit up rather invitingly, and the greens always seem to slope and can be difficult to master, adding to the overall difficulty of making birdies. The final hole is probably the standout, a raking par-5 where even an ideal tee shot leaves you with a second that must carry a lake and a stream towards a green that slopes awkwardly towards you.

A fitting climax to a round at Majestic Creek Country Club. We haven't had the opportunity to try out the newer, third nine as yet, but we hear it is a pretty tough challenge and hope to give it a go in the near future. Note: given the hilly terrain and some quite long distances between tees, this is a course where you should probably opt for the optional golf cart.
