Moon Palace Golf Club

Cancún, on the east coast of Mexico, was an isolated little fishing port on the Yucatán peninsula until the late 1960s. Fast-forward some forty years from then and – after some serious financial input over the decades – it has become one of the main tourist destinations in the country.

The enormous number of new hotels and resorts in the area has been the catalyst for the construction of over a dozen great golf courses, enabling visiting golfers to play on top tracks designed by a wide range of the great and the good in American course architecture – from Robert Trent Jones II to Robert Von Hagge, Jack Nicklaus to Tom Fazio.

Moon Palace is one such Nicklaus design and its Jungle and Lakes 9-hole courses were augmented by a new 9-hole loop named Dunes in 2004. The Nicklaus team that laid out the original 18 holes was again responsible for these additional holes but the Dunes are distinctively different from the old resort-style design of the Jungle and Lake in both looks and playability.

Riviera Golf Club The course at the Riviera Cancun Golf Club sits close to the International airport, south of the residential Hotel Zone, with fairways carved out from a dense, mangrove-clad coastal property. It’s a tough track which is characterised by narrow fairways, sandy waste areas and water hazards that come into play at almost half the holes on the scorecard. Set out by Jack Nicklaus and unveiled in 2008, the course lies close to another Golden Bear design at the Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort but the big difference between the two layouts is the heavy contours of the Rivera Cancun greens compared to the older set of putting surfaces that were constructed next door. Best holes on the front nine include the short par four 6th and the narrow, 529-yard 9th leading back to the clubhouse. The inward half actually touches the beach at the par five 14th, where the green sits behind a small lagoon, before the routing heads inland at the water-protected par three 15th for a very strong finish over the final three holes.
